What is Body, Soul and Spirit?

Body

The physical part of us, created from the dust of the ground (Genesis 2:7). It connects us to the physical world through our senses. The body is mortal and will die, but believers are promised a resurrection body (1 Corinthians 15:42–44).

Soul

Understood as the seat of mind, emotions, and will — our personality and individual self.

The word soul can also simply mean “life” (Genesis 35:18; Matthew 16:25–26). The soul connects us both to God and to the world — it’s what makes us truly ‘alive’. Spirit (Greek 'pneuma')

The deepest part of us, that which relates directly to God. When God breathed into Adam, he became a living soul (Genesis 2:7) — this breath (ruach) refers to the spirit. The human spirit is what is “dead” before salvation (Ephesians 2:1), and is made alive through the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:16).

Key Verse

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

(1 Thessalonians 5:23)

What is ‘Good’ and ‘Evil’?

God’s nature is one of LOVE that is manifest by Him being inherently MORALLY GOOD with all the faculties of morality as we know them. And loving all His creation and family.

However, these MORALLY GOOD faculties could not exist without the opposite which are MORALLY BAD aspects that we know as EVIL and hate. This is wickedness or deep moral failure and corruption.

What is ‘Morally Good’?

What is morally good, aligns with God’s character, his Word and his will. Principles such as love, obedience, wisdom, mercy, justice, holiness, righteousness, truth, light, joy, peace.

What is Free Will?

A Characteristic of all God’s beings is that God made them with a ‘free will’ to make a choice to love Him in return and to show this by conforming to his will, or not.

God’s Will and Sin

God has laid down laws whereby his beings should conduct themselves for their own good and the good of others as part of His Plan. Contravening these laws is called SIN. The penalty of sin is death. (Romans 6:23)

The Fall

The origin of Satan

One of the Arch Angels out of ‘pride’ with one-third of the Angel’s at some point rebelled against God, refused to love Him and to SIN. As a result, God banned them from Heaven and they ‘fell to Earth’. The fallen Arch Angel is now known as Satan and his fallen Angels are now known as Demons. They are spiritual beings.

Earth’s Corruption

When Satan and his Angels fell to Earth the whole Earth was corrupted by them.

Mankind

God made the Planet Earth for Mankind to live on, with the intention of husbanding it, and retaining a loving relationship with Him. Man is able to choose to love Him or not by using his free will, and not being forced to love Him.

Mankind - The first men and women

God created the first man and woman and called them Adam and Eve and instructed them to multiply and rule the earth. They were Spiritual beings that only new MORAL GOODNESS and would continue to live eternally. He placed them in a place He created for them: the Garden of Eden.

The Garden of Eden

The Garden of Eden contained plants and trees which Adam and Eve could eat from. Satan and demons had access to had access to this garden.

God’s Test of Mankind

As part of God’s Plan for mankind, God wished to test Adam and Eve to live for Him and therefore told them that He had planted a tree in the garden that they must not eat from as it contained the knowledge of both Good and Evil. They must be obedient to Him in this or they would die. This tree contained the knowledge of both ‘Good’ and ‘Evil’.

The ‘Fall’ of Mankind

Satan tempted Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and they used their free will to disobey God. As God is righteous, He then had no choice but separate Himself from them. This was similar to a spiritual death and they then became physical beings who could also physically die. Their spirits now contained both good and evil and they automatically passed these spirits on to their progeny. In choosing not to love God they also legally handed the Earth to Satan to rule Spiritually and the physical earth also fell.

GOD’S PLAN: Redemption / Rectification

God needed to redeem mankind from Satan and the fallen spirit that we are all born with in this world. He loves mankind so much and He wants us to love Him as He made us originally to do.

His plan was that over a protracted period of time, He could raise up a person, family and subsequently a nation, that would accept him and through the experience of Him blessing them, enable a woman to have enough faith to bear His own Son who could be sent to this World to save us.

Thus the story of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel) and the nation of Israel. The woman Mary and the birth and ministry of Jesus.

The Gospel – The Good News

God’s Son – Jesus, came into this world to inform us of the Gospel – the Good News that mankind and us as individuals can be redeemed by the love and Grace of God. By Jesus’s birth and ministry this Good news was made known by Jesus, the Christ.

The Death of Jesus

Satan who rules this world, engineered the cruel death of Jesus on a wooden cross when he was in His thirty’s. On the cross his body was broken, and his blood was spilt by a spear.. Satan thought that when Jesus was killed, that was the end of God’s plan of redemption, however this was indeed God’s plan: The redemption of man through the death of his Son, Jesus.

The Resurrection of Jesus

After Jesus was killed, he was laid in a tomb, but three days later His body was not there. In fact Jesus had risen from the dead and will be in heaven evermore. Jesus died for us, and His resurrection proves that God is real and that He loves us so deeply that, as the Father, He was willing to sacrifice His Son so that we might be redeemed. Through this sacrifice, the broken relationship between God and humanity was restored, and now He invites us to believe in Him and to accept Him as our Lord and Saviour.

God, our Lord and Savior

What does this mean? God has given us a free will to accept or reject Him. Because we are born with a “fallen spirit” we are evil in nature. God wants us to accept Him and to love Him again. To prove to Him we love Him, Jesus said that our spirits have to be renewed so that our pride and greed can be replaced by our love for Him that is demonstrated by accepting Him as our Lord over us and obeying His commandments.

We must be Born-again

How do we prove to God that we have accepted Him and ware willing to change. Jesus said that our spirits have to be born again. How can we achieve this? Through a simple prayer we can change our hearts if we speak it out with our mouths and believe it in our hearts we can be saved.

The payer of salvation

If you want to be redeemed by God, please say this simple prayer out-loud and believe it in your heart.

“Dear Jesus, I believe that you are the Son of God the Father who has made me to love Him. I thank you for dying for me and I confess that I am a sinner and ask you to forgive all my sins and to renew my spirit with your Holy Spirit. I now devote my life to you and asl you to come into my life as my Lord and Savior.”

The results of my Redemption

As a child of God, I can ask for His help and protection from evil in this world. We will have a better life on earth, however, God does not say that we will not suffer sorrow or trouble, but that He will help us to overcome evil in this world and that when we die physically, we will live on forever with Him in Heaven.
